If you enjoy ascending to high places to admire breathtaking cityscapes, you’ll love Xiaoyu Hill in Qingdao. Much like Naksan Park in Seoul, this hill offers a fantastic vantage point of the city, and best of all, admission is free.
Qingdao is known for its iconic imagery, especially the stunning European-style red rooftops that dot the cityscape. Perched 60 meters above ground, Xiaoyu Hill offers a perfect spot to take in this picturesque view. It’s an ideal place to relax and immerse yourself in the tranquil scenery.
As its name suggests, “Xiaoyu” (Little Fish) was once a spot where fishermen dried their nets and fish. However, in 1984, the Chinese government transformed it into a park, building a 10-meter-tall, three-story pavilion named Nanchaoge (览潮阁). Visitors can climb up to the third floor for sweeping views of Qingdao’s historic red rooftops and the serene coastline. On the opposite side, you’ll find an unparalleled view of Zhanqiao Pier. If you visit around sunset, the soft golden hues will make your experience even more magical, leaving you with unforgettable memories of Qingdao.
The park is relatively small, so an hour is enough time to explore. Beyond the pavilion, the park features beautifully manicured gardens that evoke the charm of a cozy private courtyard. On sunny days, it’s a fantastic spot for photography, thanks to the lovely greenery and well-kept trails.
