Let’s SEOUL: Part 5 -Nami Island/E-land Cruise/Myeongdong Cathedral/K-Star road/Yongma Land

The global popularity of K-pop is now accompanied by an ever-growing love for Korean dramas. Today, Korean dramas are enjoyed worldwide, but just a few years ago, this wasn’t the case. One show that marked a turning point and became a mega-hit in both Korea and Japan featured an iconic scene of the male lead walking on fallen autumn leaves. This moment left a lasting impression on viewers, and the filming location became as popular as the drama itself—Nami Island. Known as the “fairy-tale island of songs,” Nami Island offers a variety of exhibitions and concerts, making it a joyful destination for tourists. A visit during autumn, with its colorful leaves, can be particularly romantic, especially for couples looking to deepen their connection.

More information about Nami Island can be found here.

When I visit cities with rivers, I love taking river cruises. Floating along a river offers a unique perspective that differs from seeing the city on foot. The Han River, which flows through the center of Seoul, is beautiful and vast, comparable to major rivers in other big cities. I highly recommend taking a cruise on the Han River. While daytime cruises are lovely, evening cruises offer a more romantic atmosphere as you enjoy the sparkling night views of Seoul. For those with the Discover Seoul Pass, both Nami Island and E-Land Han River Cruise are available for free, making it a worthwhile addition to any itinerary. If you don’t have the pass, you can check ticket prices and cruise schedules via the link below.

If you plan to explore Myeongdong for street food and shopping, be sure to visit Myeongdong Cathedral. Even if you aren’t Catholic, this beautiful Gothic-style building, Korea’s first cathedral, is worth a visit and makes for a great photo spot. Occasionally, wedding masses are held here, offering a glimpse into Korean wedding traditions. You can check the mass schedule, including wedding ceremonies, at the link below.

For K-pop fans, K-Star Road in Apgujeong-dong is a must-visit. This street, lined with luxury shops, features statues of “Gangnam-dols” (art toy bears) representing various K-pop stars. Following the footprints of the “K-bird” along the road leads you to favorite spots frequented by your beloved stars, like restaurants and fashion shops. It’s a fun way to feel connected to your favorite idols.

One unique photo spot that many Hallyu stars have visited is Yongma Land. This abandoned amusement park has served as the backdrop for music videos of groups like Twice and Crayon Pop, as well as numerous dramas, commercials, and variety shows. Despite no longer being operational, Yongma Land’s quirky, nostalgic vibe continues to attract visitors. It’s a fascinating place to explore, offering a surreal experience and a chance to see where various stars have filmed. Since it’s popular for wedding photos and other shoots, be sure to check ahead to avoid visiting during a closed filming session. To reach Yongma Land, take Subway Line 7 to Myeonmok Station, exit at Gate 2, then take Bus 2217 and get off at Yongma Land. A short 10-minute walk from the bus stop will get you there.
