Explore Qingdao’s Bright Nights: Mingyue Shan Haijian

China is renowned for its dazzling night views that light up the darkness, as highlighted in my previous post about the “May Fourth Square Light Show.” Today, however, I’d like to introduce a slightly different way to enjoy the night—at a tourist attraction that blends traditional Chinese aesthetics with modern entertainment. Filled with cultural sculptures, amusement rides for children, and a variety of food vendors, this destination is ideal for families. If you visit at the right time, you can also catch mesmerizing performances, including the Mermaid Aquarium Show and parades. The Mermaid Show is held several times a day, alongside many other attractions that make this place worth a visit.

Night at Mingyue Shan Haijian

The destination I’d like to highlight today is Mingyue Shan Haijian (明月山海间). Historically, bustling cities in China often had “sleepless” districts, known as “Bright Night Cities,” where lights stayed on all night long. Mingyue Shan Haijian could be considered a miniature version of those iconic districts, though it doesn’t stay lit up overnight.

Though the lights don’t stay on all night, the park operates until late, making it an ideal destination for evening plans. Outside the venue, you’ll also find a bustling night market—a perfect opportunity to revisit favorite dishes or try something new if you missed out at Taidong Night Market.

Famous Bright Night Cities in China

Xi’an Tang Paradise: A cultural and historical theme park that glows with Tang Dynasty-inspired architecture and nightly light shows.

Suzhou’s Pingjiang Road: A more traditional version, where lantern-lit canals and ancient bridges create an unforgettable atmosphere.

Getting There

1. By Public Transport

Subway: Take Qingdao Metro Line 8 and alight at Hongdao Station. Exit at Exit B, and it’s approximately a 15-minute walk to the park. Simply set “明月山海间” as your destination on the Auto Navi app and follow the directions.

2. By Taxi

Using the DiDi taxi app, set your destination to “明月山海间.” A trip from downtown Qingdao costs approximately 60–90 RMB and takes around 50 minutes, depending on your starting point.
