Let’s EAT SEOUL: Part 5

If you haven’t yet read “Let’s SEOUL: Part 7 - Itaewon/Hongdae/Coex Mall/Jeongdong Observatory”, I recommend checking it out first. In this article, I’ll introduce some of the best restaurants and cafes near the landmarks mentioned in the previous post. Click here to read it before continuing.

Let’s start with Itaewon, a name that might already be familiar to K-drama fans. Itaewon was prominently featured in the hit drama Itaewon Class. Several restaurants and cafes in the area served as filming locations for the show, making them perfect stops for fans. Personally, I thoroughly enjoyed the drama, and visiting these spots brought back vivid memories of iconic scenes, making me feel like I was part of the story.

When searching for Itaewon online, you might come across mentions of the “Itaewon Tragedy.” It is a somber memory for Koreans, so if you happen to walk along the streets where it occurred, I recommend taking a moment to reflect or offer a prayer.

For fans of the drama, I’ve selected two restaurants in Itaewon that stand out as must-visit locations.

Itaewon - Restaurant Recommendations

i) Ssangdaepo BBQ

This retro Korean BBQ spot recreates the ambiance of 1980s Korea and was featured in several Itaewon Class scenes. With its vintage decor and lively vibe, it’s an unforgettable dining experience.

Address: 291 Cheongpa-ro, Yongsan-gu, Seoul

Recommendation: Pair their juicy pork belly (samgyeopsal) with soybean paste stew (doenjang jjigae).

ii) Maruku Restaurant

A cozy spot with Western-inspired dishes, this bright yellow restaurant was also used as a filming location for the drama.

Address: 27 Noksapyeongdae-ro 46-gil, Yongsan-gu, Seoul

Recommendation: Try their hearty hamburger steak or classic omelet rice.

Itaewon - Cafe Recommendation

Oriole

A beautiful rooftop cafe with stunning city views, Oriole was another Itaewon Class filming location. For those under 18, the tiramisu and coffee are perfect options. For visitors over 18, the mojitos and craft beer enhance the atmosphere.

Address: 43 Sinheung-ro 20-gil, Yongsan-gu, Seoul

Hongdae

Hongdae is the perfect destination to immerse yourself in youthful energy. As I mentioned before, I frequently visited this area to enjoy indie band performances. I’ll be writing a separate article about concert venues in Hongdae for those interested. For now, let’s focus on food and cafes.

The area is known for its vibrant and creative atmosphere, with unique stores and eateries. Among them, I recommend a place where you can enjoy marinated Korean BBQ ribs. Korean BBQ is already world-famous, but the sweet and savory flavors of marinated ribs (yangnyeom galbi) make this dish particularly special. While it’s available in many parts of Korea, Hongdae’s proximity to Mapo—a district renowned for its BBQ—makes it an ideal spot to try it.

Mapo Galmaegi

Why Visit: A lively Korean BBQ spot specializing in flavorful pork skirt meat (galmaegisal). This place captures the energetic vibe of Hongdae while offering a delicious meal.

Signature Dish: Pork skirt meat grilled at your table, complemented by soybean paste stew and spicy kimchi stew.

Address: 5 Hongik-ro 6-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul

Directions: Hongik University Station (Line 2), Exit 9, about a 7-minute walk.

Why It’s Great for Visitors: A fun and interactive dining experience perfect for groups.

Hongdae - Cafe Recommendation

This Instagram-famous cafe is a must-visit for anyone exploring the area. Known for its gorgeous aesthetic and healthy desserts, it offers the perfect opportunity to take stunning photos while enjoying delicious treats.

Thanks, Oat

Why Visit: A cozy, minimalist cafe focusing on oat-based drinks and wholesome desserts. It’s a peaceful retreat from Hongdae’s busy streets.

Signature Drink: Oat latte or oat milk matcha latte.

Signature Dessert: Seasonal fruit tart.

Address: 223-15 Yeonnam-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul

Closed: Mondays.

Why It’s Great for Visitors: A perfect spot for health-conscious friends or those who enjoy quiet, aesthetic cafes.

Coex Mall

At Coex Mall, there’s no shortage of dining options. The mall is packed with a variety of restaurants and cafes, so I recommend browsing the food court or strolling around until you find something that suits your taste. Many popular international and Korean food chains are available here, offering a diverse selection.

If you’re willing to step outside the mall, I highly recommend Pro Soy Crab, a Michelin-recommended restaurant specializing in soy-marinated crab (ganjang gejang). Although it’s on the pricier side, the rich flavors make it worth every penny.

Pro Soy Crab

Why Visit: A Michelin-recommended spot specializing in ganjang gejang (soy-marinated crab), a unique Korean delicacy packed with umami.

Signature Dish: Soy-marinated crab served with steaming rice and seaweed, creating a rich and satisfying combination.

Address: 27-1 Samseong 1-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul

Why It’s Great for Visitors: A luxurious yet authentic experience of Korean seafood cuisine.

Jeongdong Observatory Area

After enjoying the beautiful views from Jeongdong Observatory or strolling through Deoksugung Palace, I recommend trying a lesser-known but traditional Korean dish: chueotang (mudfish soup). While it might sound adventurous to some, it has long been considered a healthy, nourishing meal in Korea.

Namdo Sikdang

A humble yet popular spot among locals, Namdo Sikdang serves chueotang as its specialty. The exterior may seem unassuming, but its authentic flavors and affordable prices make it a hidden gem.

Address: 11-4 Jeongdong, Jung-gu, Seoul

I won’t recommend a specific cafe here, but the Deoksugung Stonewall Path is lined with charming coffee shops. Take a walk along this picturesque street, and you’re bound to find a cozy spot to enjoy a drink while soaking in the atmosphere.
