Let's SEOUL: Part 7 -Itaewon/Hongdae/Coex Mall/Jeongdong Observatory/

Planning a trip often involves careful consideration of opening hours for attractions and businesses. Time is precious for travelers, and missing out can be disappointing. That’s why I always end my day in cities at areas bustling with activity well into the night. If you’re visiting Seoul for a short time, let me suggest ending one of your days in Itaewon, a vibrant district teeming with 24-hour establishments and energetic nightlife. Curious about how Seoul’s youth embrace their vibrant lifestyle? Head to Itaewon and experience it for yourself.

How to Get to Itaewon

Take the Seoul Metro Line 6 to Itaewon Station and exit through Exit 1. You’ll immediately feel the buzz of youthful energy. If you’ve enjoyed the night view from Namsan Seoul Tower, take Blue Bus 405 to Itaewon for a seamless transition into the excitement. Use Google Maps or other navigation apps with this address for precise directions:
Address: 179 Itaewon-ro, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, South Korea.

Hongdae: The Heart of Seoul’s Youth Culture
Another must-visit destination is Hongdae (short for Hongik University Area), renowned as a hub of creativity and youthful spirit. Surrounding Hongik University, known for its strong arts program, this district features hip and unique shops, trendy cafes, and street performances. It’s a beloved spot for musicians and artists, making it an iconic cultural epicenter in Seoul.

Strolling through Hongdae, you’ll find delicious street food, quirky stores, and lively music filling the air. Nearby areas like Yeonnam-dong, with its guesthouses, Sangsu, and Seogyo, home to cozy cafes and cultural gems, YG Entertainment are also worth exploring. Whether you’re here for a date or a solo adventure, Hongdae promises unforgettable memories.

Coex Mall: The Ultimate Indoor Experience
If you’re visiting Seoul during winter or a rainy day, don’t let bad weather ruin your plans. Coex Mall is an excellent choice for shopping, dining, and entertainment under one roof. It’s home to the Starfield Library, perfect for a photo op or enjoying a book over coffee, and even features an aquarium included in the Discover Seoul Pass. The mall also connects to a department store for more shopping options, making it ideal for a day-long retreat.

Jeongdong Observatory: Hidden Gem Overlooking Deoksugung Palace
One of the most meaningful places in Seoul for me is Deoksugung Palace, where I got married in a beautiful church nearby on October 5, 2024. While the palace itself is stunning, walking along the Deoksugung Stone Wall Path is an especially enchanting experience, particularly during autumn when the leaves create a golden tapestry.

However, my recommendation isn’t just the palace or the stone wall—it’s the Jeongdong Observatory, offering panoramic views of the palace and Gwanghwamun. Located inside a public office building, visitors must present an ID at the first-floor lobby for access. The good news? It’s entirely free! Enjoy one of Seoul’s most breathtaking vistas without spending a dime.

How to Get to Jeongdong Observatory

Take the Seoul Metro Line 1 or Line 2 to City Hall Station and exit through Exit 12.
Address: 15 Deoksugung-gil, Jung-gu, Seoul, South Korea
